F1 Sim Sporting Chambrelan RA7R drawer slide

Brief:  As you know we get a lot of interesting case studies from customers who have bought our heavy duty drawer slides.  Over recent issues we’ve covered canopies on aeroplanes, model spitfires, stage designers, vehicle builders, military and defence (which we can’t really talk about) applications and manufacturing stories.

Our latest case study is no less interesting and has been designed to be an exact replica of an F1 race car.  The SIM, designed and built by Stable Fabrication, was designed to showcase what an F1 looks like in the flesh, so to speak.

Solution:  With need of an adjustable foot pedal, Stable came to Chambrelan and we helped them select the RA7R.  The RA7R heavy duty drawer slide is Chambrelan’s most successful slide and is capable of carrying 350kg per pair at 615mm extension.  Favoured by vehicle builders the RA7 is a three beam zinc plated heavy duty drawer slide capable of delivering a sequential load.

Brief:   36 years ago Dave decided to design and build an aeroplane. Not from a kit, mind, the plan was to design the aeroplane entirely on numbers, everything from wind velocity, aerodynamics, structural calculations and weight.  Understanding the relationship between air pressure, density and flow provided Dave with the essential mathematics from which the mechanical structure of the aircraft could be designed and built.

“I quickly realised,” confided Dave, “that I wasn’t the first to approach an aeroplane design in this way and as the project took shape it was clear that the design shaped by our calculations was incredibly similar to the P51 Mustang.” The P51 Mustang was an American long range single seat fighter bomber used by the Americans in world war II and the Korean War. Originally the Mustang sported the Allison V-1710 engine, but due to its limited high altitude performance, it was quickly replaced with a Rolls Royce Merlin, transforming the Mustang’s performance at altitudes over 15,000 feet, making it a match for the Luftwaffe’s fighters.

With the plane almost complete, the final piece of the aircraft that needed building was the canopy and this is where Chambrelan UK came in.

Solution: The drawer slides needed to extend and retract the canopy and the only heavy duty slides light enough and durable enough were the ST448 at 700mm. The ST448 is a 3 beam stainless steel heavy duty slide offering full extension, with its modest load carrying capacity of 50kg’s per pair. With it’s incredibly tight space envelope this stainless steel slide is able to endure the harsh weather at those heights, but also wind drag, while being a reliable, fail safe slide.

As you can see from the photos, the plane has had two names and used to be called ‘the Galloping Ghost’, but due to a tragic air accident in 2011, which saw a P-51D Mustang – also called the Galloping Ghost – crash into spectators killing 10, including the pilot Jimmy Leeward, and injuring 69 people, Dave decided to change the name to Rosie.

Brief: Dads: The under-sung heroes of home DIY, have just found a new champion. Meet Tony whose recently married daughter moved into their new home before Christmas and with a young family on its way needed extra storage space for their house. With the removal of an old boiler, space was made under the stairs and Tony quickly set to work building a series of storage drawers, that required Chambrelan’s heavy duty slides.

“I wanted to utilise the total depth of the cupboard,” said Tony, “but realising that it was 36 inches deep that any item stored at the rear of any potential shelving would be inaccessible due to any items placed in front of them, so the only solution was to make the drawer system reach out far enough to allow access to items and that’s when we found Chambrelan.”

Solution: The R53 is a lean and incredibly strong two-beamed telescopic slide. Zinc plated for extra protection these space conscious slides are capable of carrying 160kg per pair at 600mm and employ a run of stainless steel ball bearings that offer a smoother handling operation, despite the load. This is a medium duty slide, that requires a durable telescopic slide that will not bend or twist with over use and therefore is an ideal option for draw systems and stowage applications.

Superb Strength

Perhaps the most enquired about slide at this years DSEI show was the E1708 stainless steel heavy duty slide. The E1708 is a three sectioned I beam slide, that allows the two opposing beams to work in both directions. The I-Beam designed heavy duty slide allows for greater load capacity and extension, without an increase of the space envelope. This is essential on vehicle builds where space is a premium and load capacity is a must.

In this respect the E1708 can carry massive loads (530kg per pair at a 1000mm closed length). By using 316 grade stainless steel this slide is totally resilient to salt water corrosion and high temperatures, making it ideal for customers in the defence, naval, pharmaceutical and food processing industries.

The E1700 heavy duty slide, the zinc plated carbon steel version of the E1708, has also seen good service in vehicle conversions, especially DIY Camper conversions. Many camper conversions employ our slides for extendable pods, designed at doubling the interior living space of the vehicle.
